Professional skin exfoliation treatment microdermabrasion at AVES Beauty San Francisco

Microdermabrasion vs Chemical Peel: Which Is Right for Your Skin?

By Mariia Korolkova, Licensed Esthetician  |  AVES Beauty San Francisco

Two of the most effective professional exfoliation treatments I offer at AVES Beauty are microdermabrasion and chemical peels. Both remove dead skin cells and accelerate cell turnover. Both improve texture, tone, and radiance. But they work differently — and the right choice depends on your skin type, sensitivity, and what you are trying to fix.

What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation treatment. I use a diamond-tip handpiece with suction to physically remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells. The suction also stimulates circulation, giving skin an immediate brightening effect. It works on the stratum corneum — the very top layer — without penetrating deeper. This makes it a low-risk option for most skin types.

✓ Best for

  • Dull, rough, or uneven texture
  • Mild sun damage and fine lines
  • Clogged pores and superficial congestion
  • Skin new to professional exfoliation
  • Skin too sensitive for chemical peels

✗ Not ideal for

  • Active acne or rosacea
  • Deep pigmentation or acne scarring
  • Very sensitive or reactive skin

What Is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel uses an acid solution — typically AHA (glycolic, lactic), BHA (salicylic), or TCA — to dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, triggering controlled exfoliation and cell renewal. The depth depends on the acid type and concentration. Chemical peels can reach the dermis, making them more powerful for treating pigmentation, scarring, and deeper wrinkles — but they also require more preparation and recovery time.

✓ Best for

  • Hyperpigmentation, melasma, dark spots
  • Acne-prone skin (salicylic acid)
  • Fine lines and moderate sun damage
  • Acne scarring and post-inflammatory redness
  • Clients ready to go deeper after microdermabrasion

✗ Not ideal for

  • First-time exfoliation clients
  • Very sensitive skin without prep phase
  • Clients currently on retinoids or Accutane
  • Active open breakouts

Which Should You Start With?

If you have never had professional exfoliation before, microdermabrasion is the safer starting point. It is well-tolerated by most skin types, has no downtime, and gives you a visible result that builds over a series of sessions. If you have a specific concern — dark spots, persistent acne, or scarring — and your skin is prepped, a chemical peel series will get you there faster.

The best answer always comes from a consultation. Both treatments are available at AVES Beauty at 870 Market Street, Union Square, San Francisco.
