Best Skincare Routine for San Francisco Weather

San Francisco’s climate is unlike any other major US city. The fog, marine layer, wind, and sudden temperature swings between neighborhoods create unique challenges for your skin. Most skincare advice you read online is written for people in dry-hot or humid climates. Here is what actually works in San Francisco, from a licensed esthetician who treats SF clients every day.

The SF Skin Problem Most People Miss

San Francisco fog feels damp. People assume that means their skin is getting hydrated. It is not. Cold marine air actually pulls moisture from the skin’s surface through evaporation. The wind accelerates this effect. The result: San Francisco residents are some of the most chronically dehydrated skin clients I see at AVES Beauty, and most of them have no idea because the air feels “moist.”

This is different from dry skin. Dehydrated skin lacks water, not oil. You can have oily, acne-prone skin that is also deeply dehydrated. If your skin feels tight after washing, looks dull by midday, or absorbs moisturizer instantly and still feels parched, you are dealing with dehydration.

Morning Routine for San Francisco Skin

  1. Gentle cleanser. Not foam. Not bar soap. A cream or milk cleanser that does not strip the skin’s natural moisture barrier. If your cleanser makes your face feel “squeaky clean,” it is too harsh for SF weather.
  2. Hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid. Apply on damp skin. Hyaluronic acid pulls water into the skin, but only if there is moisture available. In dry climates this can backfire. In San Francisco’s humidity, it works well.
  3. Moisturizer. A medium-weight moisturizer that seals hydration in. Look for ceramides, squalane, or niacinamide. Too light and the wind strips it off. Too heavy and it congests pores.
  4. SPF 30 or higher. Every single day. UV penetrates fog. San Francisco’s UV index is moderate even on overcast days. I see more unprotected sun damage in SF clients than people expect, precisely because they skip SPF on cloudy days.

Evening Routine

  1. Double cleanse. Oil-based cleanser first to remove SPF, makeup, and pollution. Then a gentle water-based cleanser. San Francisco air carries particulate matter from traffic — you need both steps.
  2. Treatment serum. This is where your active ingredients go — retinol (if tolerated), vitamin C, or niacinamide. Apply to clean skin before moisturizer.
  3. Night moisturizer or sleeping mask. Slightly richer than your morning moisturizer. The goal is to lock in hydration overnight so you wake up with plump, balanced skin.

Seasonal Adjustments

Summer (June through September): San Francisco’s warmest months are September and October. Fog burns off earlier. Switch to a lighter moisturizer and increase SPF diligence. If you work in the Financial District or SOMA where it gets genuinely warm, add blotting papers for midday oil control.

Winter (November through February): Colder, windier, and indoor heating dries skin further. Layer a heavier cream, consider adding a facial oil on top of your moisturizer at night, and book a professional hydration facial at AVES Beauty once a month to counteract the seasonal damage.

The One Product Most SF Clients Need

If I could only recommend one product to every San Francisco client, it would be a barrier-repair moisturizer with ceramides. Your moisture barrier is the frontline defense against fog, wind, and temperature swings. Most skin problems I see at AVES Beauty — acne, sensitivity, redness, flaking — trace back to a damaged barrier. Fix that, and everything else gets easier.
